Lance’s Teaching Philosophy
“My philosophy of motorcycle instruction is based on the same principles used in police motor schools: building highly skilled, confident riders through a progressive and disciplined approach to training. Every rider, regardless of experience level, has the potential to achieve a higher level of motorcycle control when proper techniques are taught, practiced, and reinforced through structured coaching.
I believe that exceptional riding skills are developed through a series of building blocks. Each skill forms the foundation for the next, creating a strong framework that supports overall riding proficiency. Rather than overwhelming students with advanced techniques too early, I focus on gradual progression. Riders first master the fundamentals of vision, balance, clutch and throttle control, braking, body positioning, and low-speed maneuvering. Once these core skills become second nature, more complex exercises can be introduced with confidence and success.
My role as a mentor is to create an environment where students can learn, practice, make mistakes, and improve without fear of failure. Effective coaching requires patience, clear communication, and positive reinforcement. I strive to identify each student’s strengths and areas for improvement, tailoring instruction to their individual needs while maintaining consistent standards of excellence.
The police motor school model emphasizes repetition with purpose. Through deliberate practice, riders develop muscle memory, precision, and confidence. Every exercise is designed to reinforce proper technique and build upon previously learned skills. Small improvements compound over time, resulting in significant gains in motorcycle control, situational awareness, and rider confidence.
Above all, I teach riders to understand not just how to perform a skill, but why the skill is important. When riders understand the principles behind motorcycle dynamics and control, they become more adaptable, safer, and more capable in real-world riding situations. My goal is to help students develop habits that extend beyond the training range and become lifelong riding skills.
Success is measured not by how quickly a rider completes a course, but by the growth in confidence, competence, and control they demonstrate throughout the learning process. By using a structured, progressive coaching approach and building a solid foundation one skill at a time, I aim to bring out the very best in every rider and help them achieve their highest potential as motorcyclists.”
